Jie Qi from MIT's Media Lab will be teaming up with paper engineer Colette Fu to teach you how to make your own electronic pop-up cards! This workshop covers creating pop-up cards, basic electronic switches and methods for adding light to the cards. Participants will learn how to power multiple LEDs with batteries, the mechanics of designing their own paper switches, and finally the pop-up techniques. Students will leave with several working models just in time for Valentine's Day.... glowing pop-up heart anyone? No soldering required!

“Miss Lucy” – Folk Opera World Premiere

This Thursday is opening night for “Miss Lucy,” a folk opera based on the life of Roanoke educator Lucy Addison, premiering on the stage of the June M. McBroom Theater at Community High School.

Les Epstein, chair of the department of theatre at CHS, is the director and librettist, and the music is composed by bluegrass mandolinist Tom Ohmsen (CHS adjunct in music theory) and jazz pianist William Penn. Artist Colette Fu, daughter of Local Colors‘ Pearl Fu, designed the set, which is being painted by Brian Counihan, CHS dean of arts and humanities.

3 Pagodas 崇圣寺三塔 and Banyan Family Tree

Dali 大理 was once a swamp inhabited by dragons that created natural disasters to deter humans from arriving. Known for their resilience, the 3 pagodas 崇圣寺三塔 were built to ward off their evil. Although built in the Tang dynasty, the main pagoda still stands 227 feet high. Valuable Buddhist sculptures, scriptures and medicines telling the history of Dali were found inside.

The banyan tree represents all China's ethnic groups, representing long life with firmly planted roots that hold onto the earth. Banyan trees are regarded as symbols of the holy, spiritual and auspicious.

After 2 weeks of Euroroll, skating in Prague, Budapest, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and London, I headed to Zadar, Croatia to do a 2 day pop-up stop motion workshop with animator Helena Bulaja. The workshop was a prefestival collaboration with DECro and Film Forum Zadar http://www.filmforumzadar.com/. We spent the 1st day learning pop-up mechanisms; the 2nd day we used images from Helena's Mechanical Figures, Inspired by Tesla to make our own pop-up stop-motion animation. Helena appropriately titled it Pop-up at Tesla Street. Check out the video here.

Nearly two thousand Yi gather on a hillside in Yongren County for their annual costume festival. Their embroidery contains important symbols of Yi myths and legends. Need an activity for Valentine’s Day? Reserve a seat in Colette Fu’s Pop-Up Workshop for you and your honey.

Colette Fu is more than a paper engineer. She reclaims the art-form of “moveable books” – commonly associated with children – and makes works that have sociological, scientific and philosophical bents. Through pop-up books, she has explored the concept of anxiety, criminal justice, and the ghosts of American history.

Right now, she’s working on a project called “We are Tiger Dragon People,” a pop-up project funded with Colette’s Fulbright Scholarship that captures the 25 different ethnic minorities in China’s Yunnan Province.

This exhibition addresses the themes of the book as object, subject, and concept. Stretching the definition of book, the show includes artist-made books, deconstructed books, and book installations. J. Susan Isaacs, PhD., Curator of Special Projects, has organized this exhibition to take into account all of these approaches.

Participating artists include Blanka Amezkua (manipulated Mexican adult comic book), Melissa Jay Craig (wall installation of book forms), Colette Fu (pop-up books), Jody Alexander (book installation), Buzz Spector (artist-made book), Brian Dettmer (altered book), Doug Beube (altered book), and Ulla Einstein (the deconstructed “book”). The exhibition will present, through the work of 47 nationally-known artists, various conceptual and formal approaches related to the idea of the “book.”

There will be a symposium on the theme of the exhibition with presentations by artists Buzz Spector, Brian Dettmer, Doug Beube, Melissa Jay Craig, and the Chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, Library of Congress, Mark Dimunation on Friday evening, March 25th and Saturday, March 26th at the DCCA. The exhibition will later travel to Towson University in Maryland where it will be on display in the Center for the Arts Gallery from September 8—November 5, 2011.

Handmade Paper in Motion

Suminagashi, a type of Japanese marbling, originated in China over 2,000 years ago and was practiced in Japan by Shinto priests as early as the 12th century. Suminagashi literally translates as “spilled ink.” The pop-up is of a bottle of sumi ink spilling the Japanese w...ords “不拘一格”, a well-known Chinese idiom meaning unbridled creativity. Literally, this could translate as “not sticking to one pattern,” here referring to how Suminagashi follows it’s own flow and never repeats itself. Red, blue and black are the traditional colors used.

Handmade Paper in Motion

This extraordinary assortment of collaborative artwork--14 pieces by 28 artists--features pop-ups, movable devices, and other forms of dynamic paper engineering. The motion and imagery is enhanced physically and conceptually by the use of handmade paper designed and made specifically for each edition.

The movable elements are as captivating as an African mask or a working sundial, as intriguing as a sealed packet or a ‘magic window’ into plant fiber mysteries, as surprising as a spilled ink bottle or a jar of snakes! Imaging techniques include suminagashi marbling, woodcut, linocut, letterpress, pochoir, pulp painting, and screenprint. The paper is enhanced with watermarks, natural inclusions, double couching, multi-colored pulps, and other innovative methods. The artists incorporate a wide variety of paper fibers. Some are utilitarian and traditional such as cotton, abaca, and flax; others are more unusual such as yucca, gingko, and bamboo.

A custom-made clamshell box houses the work, each in a protective folder imprinted with the artists’ names. A handbound booklet contains statements from each artist and a commissioned essay by well-known pop-up collector and author Ann Montanaro, who founded the Movable Book Society.

Bonnie Stahlecker has taught and lectured on artist books and dimensional graphics for decades and has a background in papermaking. Carol Barton is an artist and teacher best known for her Pocket Paper Engineer how-to guides.

All proceeds from sales of Handmade Paper in Motion benefit Hand Papermaking, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing traditional and contemporary ideas in the art of hand papermaking.

Rubén proposes to Claudia and she said yes!

The plan was that my future brother in law (Arnoldo) made this special goodbye dinner for his sister (Norma). I told Claudia I was on a business trip and that I was going to make it late for dinner.

Claudia is going to sell some pop up books, so I bought three pop up books and your proposal one. What we did (in conspiracy with Arnoldo and his Wife Nanette) was that Nanette told Claudia that her little son got some pop up books from kindergarten. She gave the books to Claudia and she started watching them. The last one was the proposal one and I was hiding in a a room next to the kitchen, where Claudia was. So, there I was very nervous listening to them talking about the pop ups and Claudia even went for a pen to write the publishers. At the end she finally saw the proposal one and opened it, and when I heard the music coming from the pop up book I came out and proposed. It was nice and she loved it and thought of it as very original. So then I became an engaged man! How about that?!

Long ago, there was a young Yi couple in love. They met in the forest, and in pursuit of the girl, the Devil King killed the boy. As the girl fled to the edge of the village, she suddenly heard the loud crow of a cock. An old man taught her to make a cock to crow to call out the sun and drive the devil away. The girl saved her boyfriend, and the villagers decided to show their gratitude for the cock that saved their life. Yi people began to make cockscomb hats and now believe that it can bring luckiness, brightness, safety and happiness to the world. It is said that the silver bubbles on the hat stand for stars and moon, and symbolize eternal light and happiness.

Wa Rub You Black Festival

The Wa people live in Cangyuan, within the Awa Mountains on the borders of Burma and China. According to legend, if the Wa sacred medicine niangbuluo" is rubbed onto girls" faces, they become increasingly beautiful; onto elders"faces, they will be healthy and long-lived; onto children's faces, they will be safe and lucky. Now they rub mud mixed with perfume.

The Stone Forest

The Stone Forest dates back to the Ming Dynasty- 270 million years ago an immense expanse of water with a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed over the years on the seafloor. As a result of the crustal movement, the seabed rose gradually and a large piece of land came into being. Eroded by rain and wind, limestone ranges were shaped by time. About 200 million years ago stone peaks, pillars, and stalagmites rose abruptly from the ground and towered into the sky, looking like a vast forest of stone.

Lisu Hot Springs Gathering

Every Spring Festival, the Lisu people gather at the Hot Springs by the Nujiang River in NW Yunnan. By taking baths and washing off dirt with sacred spring water, people hope for forthcoming auspiciousness.

Yi Tiger Festival

It is said that the Yi people from Shuangbai County once lived in a dense forest disturbed by snakes and wild animals. In order to prevent themselves from being hurt, they thought out a way to guard the village. Under the lead of the black “Tiger King”, they perform all kinds of dances reflecting the production, living, and procreation of the Yi people and go to each house at the village to help get rid of evils. Thus the Tiger Dance was created ever since, showing their tiger-like strength and valor.

King Yimouxun of the Nanzhao Kingdom built Yuantong temple during the late eighth century. Kunming locals and Yunnan in general come here on pilgrimages to pay respect. On the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, old women gather at what is the largest Buddhist temple in Kunming.

Stone Forest

The Sani live in and around Stone Forest, and are a subgroup of the Yi. Their lives are as colorful as their embroidered clothing, and they treasure song and dance above wealth and success. Their legend of Ashima is sung from generation to generation and is an inspiration for Sani women today who refer to it as "the song of our ethics.”

Ashima was a young Sani girl engaged to be married to (her cousin) Ahei.

Azhi, the son of the village leader, in a jealous rage Kidnapped Ashima and tried to force her to marry him. Azhi unleashed a trio of tigers to kill Ahei who killed the tigers with arrows and escaped unscathed.

When Ashima and Ahei were playing by a river, Azhi used his power to generate a flood. Ashima drowned but Ahei continued to call her name only to hear his own echo. Ashima turned into river stones and her words echoed through the forest: I will never disappear even as the sun and cloud disappear, my soul and my sound will exist till the end of time. Sani people say that Ashima’s suffering is their suffering.

Wa Hair Swinging Dance

The Wa people regard the wooden drum as a divine tool that has exceptional power and is the symbol of existence and prosperity. Wa women uninhibitedly swing their long black, shiny long hair to the beat of the drums. Their beat is slow and fast, representing anger and sadness, anxiety and happiness.

Hani Long Table Banquet

Scattered throughout Yunnan, Vietnam and Laos, over 90% of the Hani live in Yunnan. Every year after the autumn harvest comes the most important festival for Hani people; the Long Table Banquet is part of their October New Year where 3,000 tables are laid end to end along the street like a long dragon.

Tibetan Dog/Bear

In Tibetan lore each Lama has a Temple dog. When a Lama dies it is believed that he is reincarnated as another Temple dog. Thus he would serve two lifetimes of strict adherence to ritual worship, chanting, meditating, and sacrifice.

In Tibetan they are called Do-Khyi, meaning tied dogs because they are primarily used as guardian dogs who are able to dutifully protect against intruders and can fight off wolves and leopards. Last year, A Tibetan Mastiff is believed to have broken the record as the world’s most expensive dog — sold to a young Chinese millionaire for $582,000.

Dulong River Valley

Only about 4600 Dulong people reside near the Dulong River in NW Yunnan, along the borders of Tibet and Burma. In former times, the main decoration for women was the facial tattoo, etched using bamboo needles and ink made out of ashes from the bottoms of pans. Girls got their tattoos at puberty and each clan had its own set of designs. The origin is not clear, but some claim it was a reaction to the assault of powerful neighboring tribes (Tibetans to the North, and Lisu to the east) who enslaved the Dulong and went after their women. Hence, they were tattooed to make them unattractive to the oppressors. Dulong woman believe that their tattoos resemble butterflies because the souls of the dead were said to turn into butterflies. As of 2009, there were only 40 tattooed Dulong women left.

Axi Fire Festival

The Axi, one of the 27 branches of Yi celebrate the Axi Fire Festival

to honor Mu Deng, the man who brought them fire. Legend has it that once when the naked Axi were hunting, heavy rains came down, sending them to shelter under an old tree. An old wizard, Mu Deng, appeared, rubbed some dry wood together and started a fire. The Axi were no longer cold and learned how to cook food.

Naxi Sanduo (Wargod) Ceremony

"Sanduo" is a spiritual war God created by the Naxi who have lived for generations at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Legend says that a brave Naxi hunter chased a white deer who ran and hid behind a white rock and disappeared. The hunter struggled to carry the white rock back to his home, but it quickly grew too heavy for him to carry. Believing that the rock was the Holy Spirit of the mountain god, the Naxi built a temple upon the rock to enshrine it. At the temple, the incarnation of a divine general was frequently seen riding on a white horse with white armor and a white spear, protecting the Naxi. During war, his troops assisted the NaxI; during fire, he created snow out of fog; and in outbreaks of pestilence, he created wind. Thus people addressed his as " Sanduo"ˇmeaning the patron god of the Lijiang Flatland.

Yao Bride

In Tai Yang (Sun) Village, on the border of Laos, the 17 yr old bride said "I have to do it now cause I'm getting too old." Her bridesmaids were 14, 16 and 26. The 16 yr old was getting married 2 days later. The ceremony lasted 2 days - the 1st day is spent at the Bride's home, the 2nd day she entered the Groom's home - finalizing the marriage.

Yi Costume Festival

Nearly two thousand Yi gather on a hillside in Yongren County for their annual costume festival. Their embroidery contains important symbols of Yi myths and legends.

Long ago, there was a young Yi couple in love. They met in the forest, and in pursuit of the girl, the Devil King killed the boy. As the girl fled to the edge of the village, she suddenly heard the loud crow of a cock. An old man taught her to make a cock crow to call out the sun and drive the Devil away. The girl saved her boyfriend, and the villagers decided to show their gratitude for the cock that saved their life. Yi people began to make cockscomb hats and now believe that it can bring luckiness, brightness, safety and happiness to the world. It is said that the silver bubbles on the hat stand for stars and moon, and symbolize eternal light and happiness.

Dai Food

In Xishuangbanna, where the largest number of Dai live, they refer to their area as bazi meaning tranquil and beautiful. This land is near river basins in a lush subtropical land where the soil is very fertile. Their food is similar to Thai food in that it combines sour, spicy, salty and sweet flavors.

Hani Rice Terraces

The Hani people have cultivated the terraces of Yuanyang since the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD). With a subtropical climate and an advanced irrigation system, the rice fields are relatively self-sustaining as evaporated water is trapped within the surrounding forest forming a sea of clouds ready to replenish the fields. They are a broadening of the natural landscape and represent a harmony of nature and human will.

Shangrila

Zhongdian was renamed in 2001 after the fictional land of Shangri-La in James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon. Songzanlin Monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. Tibetan Buddhists place prayer flags along mountain ridges and high places where the wind can spread their prayers across the countryside. The colors represent the elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. In Tibetan, prayer flags literally translate as “to increase life, fortune, health and wealth to all sentient beings”.

Xishuangbanna literally means "twelve thousand rice fields". It straddles the Lancang River, has Asia’s last elephants, and is in a tropical climate surrounded by rainforest and most medicinal plants that are available in China. Returning here I had a sense of dread since the last time I was here for the Dai Water Splashing Festival my big camera got blessed by water and broke, and my smaller one got stolen. Panhu, which is also called Panwang and Pangu, is the name of a legendary dragonlike dog- a totem to the Yao people. Many Yao people believe that Panhu is their first ancestor. They worship, offer sacrifice, and gradually began to celebrate him during their Panwang Festival. The festival was being held in Yaoqu, NE of Mengla- one of the main counties of Xishuangbanna. On the way from Jinghong, the capital, I got a phone call from a lady from Mengla. Her daughter was doing her master’s at the minority school in Kunming, my teacher told her I was coming. She picked me up at the bus station and took me to her home. Her friends came by shortly after and drove us to Yaoqu. She was born there, is Yao minority, so we stayed in her relative’s house. The Yao are hunters so we ate a lot of pork roasted in bamboo.

Back in Tonghai, the Hui Muslims of Nanjiayan (Nagu zhen) celebrated their Holyman Day which loosely refers to their version of Christmas. Nagu town's history dates back to 1290 AD when a descendent of the prophet Mohammed came from the North and settled his family in Yunnan. About 700 Hui families now live in Nanjiayan.

HANI Long Table Banquet

After a night of celebrating Halloween at the Speakeasy Bar, Julia and I headed South to Luchun for the Hani Long Table Banquet. Remnants of tropical storm Kammuri left it raining the whole time we were there. Scattered throughout Yunnan, Vietnam and Laos, over ninety percent of the Hani live in Yunnan. Revealed here through their diverse costumes, there are many different branches of Hani; they are decended from the Yi.

The Long Table Banquet is part of their October New Year where 3,000 tables are put together. Due to the rain, it was difficult to photograph the length of the tables.

The Mosuo Walking around the Mountain Festival is to worship Gemu Goddess Mountain and pray for the Goddess' protection. It is held annually in Yongning, Xiao Liang Shan about 20 kilometers from Lugu Lake. The government places them as members of the Naxi minority although they are significantly culturally distinct. Because of the rain, the crowd was smaller this year and most of the young girls weren't dressed in costume. Although Lugu Lake was on the way, we didn't stop there.

The Mosuo culture is most frequently described as a matriarchal culture. In fact, the Mosuo themselves frequently use this description, to attract tourism and interest in their culture. The Mosuo culture defies categorization within traditional Western definitions. They have aspects of a matriarchal culture, in that women are, in many households, the head of the house, property is passed through the female line, and women tend to make the business decisions. But political power tends to be in the hands of males, which disqualifies them as a true matriarchy.

Probably the most famous and most misunderstood aspect of Mosuo culture is their practice of “walking marriage”, so called because the men will walk to the house of their ‘partner' at night, but return to their own home in the morning. The Mosuo generally live in large extended families, with many generations (great grandparents, grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc.) all living together within the same house. For the most part, everyone lives within communal quarters, without private bedrooms or living areas. However, women between certain ages (see the section on “coming of age” above) can have their own private bedrooms.

Traditionally, a Mosuo woman who is interested in a particular man will invite him to come and spend the night with her in her room. Such pairings are generally conducted secretly, so the man will walk to her house after dark, spend the night with her, and return home early the next morning. While it is possible for a Mosuo woman to change partners as often as she likes – having only one sexual partner would be neither expected nor common – the majority of such couplings will actually be more long term. Few Mosuo women will have more than one partner at a time. More than one anthropologist has described this system as “serial monogamy” as many of these pairings may last a lifetime. Even when a pairing may be long term, however, the man will never go to live with the woman's family, or vice versa. He will continue to live with and be responsible to his family; she will continue to live with and be responsible to her family. There will be no sharing of property.

Peace had come. Now China needed unity. Last week Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek acted decisively to unify his country.

Deposed Dragon. First he moved against China's strong war lord, one-eyed General Lung Yun, the rascally "old dragon" of Yunnan. By gun and guile, Lung had ruled that strategic southwestern province of China since 1927. His capital, Kunming, was the biggest U.S. air base in the country, and during the war he had played host to many a U.S. officer and touring bigwig. Last week Chiang deposed the "old dragon" of Yunnan, completing a political conquest of the vast western hinterland.

Six years ago, when Chiang Kai-shek retreated into western China rather than come to terms with the Japanese, he was forced into an area barely under his control and hardly touched by the national revolution. The two principal provinces of west China are Szechwan (pop.: 60 million) and Yunnan (pop.: 11 million). Both were dominated by old-style war lords. In 1941 Chiang ousted the war lord of Szechwan, appointing an honest and progressive governor.

When the Dragon of Yunnan's turn came last week, General Lung was caught with his military pants down: obeying Chiang's orders, a good part of his private army of over 100,000 men was far away, in Indo-China. Chiang ordered Lung to take a face-saving job in Chungking. Lung refused: the Dragon's teeth were not to be pulled so easily. That night rifles cracked in Kunming: next morning a score of bodies lay at the South Gate.

For four days the excitement continued. Soldiers of Chiang Kai-shek's army were all over the place. Only a few companies of Lung's troops did any shooting, and the Dragon never had a chance. On the fourth day Premier T. V. Soong flew down from Chungking. He and the Chinese commander in chief, General Ho Ying-chin, had a morning conference with General Lung, that afternoon escorted the amiable old scoundrel by air to Chungking. General Lu Han, Lung's former aide, took over the Yunnan government for the Generalissimo.

Soon, from nearly every shop and house in Kunming, the national flag of the new China was flying.

Report in the North. Unity in the west had hardly been established before stories of even more drastic unification came out of the Communist area of northern China. They were Communist stories, unconfirmed at week's end by Chiang or anybody else in Chungking. Their substance: while the Generalissimo was negotiating with Communist Mao Tse-tung in Chungking, three of Chiang's armies had attacked Communist forces in Communist-controlled Shansi province, Kwantung, the Yangtze basin, and north of the Yellow River. In some instances, said the Communists, Chiang's troops had invoked the aid of Japanese and puppet forces. Already the Communists, by their own account, had yielded 19 towns.

Chungking dispatches maintained that

1) the reports were distorted reflections of maneuvers for position by both sides. 2) Chiang and Mao were no closer on the fundamental issue—who should control the Communist armies and the Communist state-within-a-state—than they had been at the start. A.P. predicted that the talks would probably end this week. It looked as if Chiang Kai-shek might have to find other means to complete the unification of China.
